The beginning of the year in Vienna also marks the beginning of the ball season – so it’s time again to unpack your chic evening attire and venture onto the dance floor. In this article, I’ll tell you which Viennese balls should definitely be on your agenda in 2019.

Soon it will be said: Everything is waltz! Because the Viennese ball season is in the starting blocks and offers some highlights again this year. Whether elegant, colorful or just crazy – the list of Viennese balls is long and varied. So that you can get a small overview, I have summarized the most beautiful balls in Vienna for you – you should note these events on your to-do list!

Confectioner’s Ball

If you have a sweet tooth, take note – on January 17th the Zuckerbäckerball will take place in the Hofburg for the 118th time . As the name suggests, it is the sweetest ball in Vienna – so guests can look forward to lots of sweets. During the entire ball there will be various tastings and competitions – a special highlight is the presentation of the Zuckerbäcker Awards. Numerous impressive cakes are exhibited and rated by various pastry chefs directly in the hall.

The show bakery is also worth a visit, where you can watch the bakers’ hands – including tastings of course. If you haven’t had enough of the sweets on site, you can even take your own cake home with you. In the big raffle, 3,000 artistic cakes will be raffled off! So after this ball you are guaranteed to have a sugar shock!

Philharmonic ball

The Vienna Philharmonic Ball, on the other hand, is a bit more traditional . The elegant ball, which this year takes place on January 24th , attracts with a unique ambience and of course great classical music. The guests include numerous celebrities, actors and politicians – after all, it is one of the most popular and oldest balls in Vienna. The Philharmonic Ball has been attracting high society to the dance floor since 1924 – nobody wants to miss this social event!

From the great live orchestra to the splendid location, nothing is left to chance here – that’s exactly how you imagine a Viennese ball. As every year, the golden hall of the Wiener Musikverein serves as the venue again this year, tickets will be available from January 14th.


According to rctoysadvice, a somewhat different kind of ball will take place on February 23 in the Ottakringer Brewery. The Technoball is the perfect alternative for everyone who finds classic balls too stuffy. Instead of waltzes, there are fat techno beats and crazy costumes instead of evening wear. The extraordinary concept seems to work well, after all, the ball is taking place for the 10th time this year.

For the anniversary, visitors can look forward to an ingenious LED robot show, sexy dancers and of course many first-class DJs. All those who secure a VIP ticket can already take part in the techno cocktail before the ball and get in the mood for the upcoming night in the lounge area. The official start is from 9 p.m. – of course, the party continues until the early hours of the morning.

Opera Ball

The opera ball should of course not be missing from the list of the most beautiful Viennese balls – after all, it is internationally known and ensures a real media spectacle every year. This year the Ball of Balls will take place on February 28th and will once again attract anyone who is self-respecting to the Vienna State Opera. A total of over 5,000 visitors are expected this year – including, of course, many celebrities, politicians and stars from the world of sports. In addition, it will be interesting to see which star guest Richard Lugner will invite to his box this year.

The celebrity guests are of course welcomed on the red carpet in keeping with their standing – the Vienna Opera Ball is hard to beat when it comes to glamor. If you want to be part of the dazzling guest list, you have to dig deep into your pocket – because, as is well known, tickets for the Opera Ball are not exactly cheap and also very difficult to get. Advance ticket sales will start on February 9th.

Diversity Ball

The Diversity Ball is all about diversity and is very popular every year. Also this year a colorful audience is expected in the Wiener Kursalon, because no matter what origin, sexual orientation or religion you have – everyone is welcome at the Diversity Ball! This great cosmopolitan attitude makes this ball one of the best in Vienna. This year everything is under the motto masquerade – so unusual disguises are welcome!

The program should again be very varied and flashy – in the past there were performances by the Krumbach ladies’ shoe platters and a Bollywood dance group. This year the ball will take place on May 4th , tickets are already available online.

Life Ball

What would the Vienna ball season be without the famous Life Ball ? Founded in 1993 by Gery Keszler and Torgom Petrosian, the shrill event is one of the most important AIDS charity events in the world today. Every year a part of the tickets is donated to AIDS foundations. That’s what makes the Life Ball so special – it’s not just about having fun, it’s also doing something for a good cause.

  • Style ticket: 90 €
  • Regular ticket: 180 €

This year the shrill event will take place on June 8th , the motto is not yet fixed, but one thing can be anticipated: it is guaranteed to be creative again! If you want to be at the Life Ball this year, you can choose between the so-called style tickets (requirement is a fancy costume) and regular tickets. But you don’t get the tickets just like that – they are given out at random and the rush is huge.
