The history of Briarcliff Manor dates back to the late 17th century when it was part of the Adriance Farm owned by Frederick Philipse and his wife Margaret Hardenbroeck Philipse. In 1697, Frederick Philipse III purchased what would become Briarcliff Manor from the Siwanoy Indians for goods valued at 800 pounds sterling. He then established the manor house which still stands today as a reminder of the past and gave it its name: “Briarcliff” after the wild roses which grew around it in abundance at that time.
In 1732, Frederick Philipse III passed away leaving his estate to his sons who later sold off portions of it including what would become Briarcliff Manor in 1753 for 2,400 pounds sterling to Walter Thomas and John Thomas Jr., two Quakers from Philadelphia who had settled in New York City’s East Village several years prior. The Thomas family owned the property until 1845 when they sold it to William and Mary Ann Hammond for $35,000 dollars who then set up a summer resort on their new purchase called “Briarcliff Lodge” which quickly became popular among those looking for a respite from city life during warm summer months.
