XYZprinting Da Vinci 1.0 AiO in the Praxistest

The XYZprinting Da Vinci 1.0 AiO creates 3D scans and prints them as a 3D object. The test checks whether this is as simple as it sounds.

The idea is great: The multifunction device XYZprinting Since Vinci1.0 AiO, three-dimensional objects not only print but also scan. Is this the perfect machine to provide a safe supply of spare parts or copies of favorite figures at home? From the price already already: Because the all-in-one device with around 800 euros is quite favorable. Many 3D printers, which only print, are often clearly in the acquisition. Whether the multifunction device but also the desire for child-made 3D copies holds, can only decide the practice test.

After unpacking it is clear that we already know the 3D printing unit. Dating back to the XYZprinting Da Vinci 1.0 , which we have already tested. Externally, the Da Vinci 1.0 AiO also resembles the pure printer variant. It is relatively clumsy and a round device closed.On the front are the display and the buttons. In the test version can be selected as German language – the pure 3D printer was not yet. Connections to the 3D printing combi boiler limited to USB as a connection to the computer. It does not offer an SD card slot. It is therefore not possible to drive without a PC.

The inner life of the Da Vinci 1.0 AiO

In addition to the printing platform, there is also a built-in turntable and two laser lenses, as well as a camera whose resolution is XYZprinting with 2 megapixels. Scanning and printing can not happen at the same time. In contrast to the construction platform, the turntable for 3D scanning is firmly fixed to the bottom of the Da Vinci 1.0 AiO. This is why the print surface has to move upwards for scanning. If it is to start printing, the turntable must again be empty in order to avoid collisions. This is because the more the object “grows”, the more the printing platform moves downwards.

Separate programs for printing and scanning

To use the two functions of the Da Vinci 1.0 AiO, there are two separate programs on the supplied CD. The software XYZware accepts printing in 3D. XYZscan is responsible for scanning. In the test, we install both programs on the test computer and carry out an update. If you want to download the latest versions directly from the manufacturer’s website, you will be prompted to register. By CD you get off without Accounterstellung.

The XYZscan scanning program is essentially limited to the functions you need for the process of digitizing: you can start a scanner calibration, import scans, start a scanning process with a preview, or make simple improvements to the scanning quality after scanning. The scan quality can be set in various levels: light, normal or dark. In addition, the mode “Auto”, where it is left to the program and the Da Vinci 1.0 AiO, as the scan template recognize. The setting depends on the subject. White things should be sampled best. The darker the scanned object, the harder it is.
The scan when XYZprinting Da Vinci 1.0 AiO: Solving of a scan, sets the turntable in motion. The combiner uses the light-cutting method to digitize an object in 3D. The laser emits a red light beam at the object, which the camera takes from a certain angle. The plate rotates continuously in small steps, the next shots of the light beam are added.From the data, the calculated software in the form of the digital object.

During a scan, the Da Vinci 1.0 AiO makes two complete turns. Both lasers are used: the first is from the top, the second is from the bottom of the scanning template. The read-in process takes about 5 minutes in the test. In addition, the calculation process takes about 3 minutes. Overall, the test items are digitized in the test after approximately 8 minutes and loaded in the software.

The size of the object is irrelevant. At the maximum, objects can be scanned, measuring 15 centimeters in height and diameter and weighing up to three kilograms. The manufacturer specifies a 0.25 millimeter scale. In XYZscan the finished scan can be saved in two formats – as a printable STL or DAS – a proprietary format from the manufacturer.

Scan quality – depending on the original, but never 1: 1

In the test, we tried different objects: To start with, for example, the test pot, which the XYZprinting Da Vinci 1.0 printed at the time. The reason: The supplied filament was white – the ideal prerequisite for the light-cutting process and, in our view, the lightest task for the 3D scanning unit. As a summary of the preview, we get the object data for the object. Here, the dimensions are the same as the original. Therefore, we take the data and initiate the actual scan. If this is done, we see the result in XYZscan. Visually, it looks good. Therefore we load the data from the program directly into the printing software XYZware and have the item printed.

The result is quite sobering: neither the height and wall thickness match the original, nor the inside of the pot. Here, the scanner detected additional structures that were not there. At the same time, the slicer can start with the scandals only to a limited extent. This is shown at the bottom of the pot, which has absolutely confused printer paths.

If the object is more complex and has several colors – about a figure, accumulate the errors. Thus parts of the arm are missing or spaces between the arm and the trunk have been recognized as a piece. At the same time the surface suffers. Because with different and in addition dark colors the camera has increased obviously also more problems, the reflections of the scanner accurately record. As the scan program does not allow much processing, the result remains disappointing.

Shortly to the printing unit and the software XYZware: The Da Vinci 1.0 AiO can now deal with ABS and PLA plastics. This was not possible with the pure 3D printer Da Vinci 1.0. He specialized in ABS filaments. At the basic printing quality, however, we have not changed much: the individual layers remain clearly visible in the objects of the combineret. The printing software XYZware offers with Version a German-language menu and is visually somewhat revised. The basic functions have not changed.

Consumption of the XYZprinting Da Vinci 1.0 AiO

In addition, the unit continues to operate with coded filament cartridges. However, something has happened in the after sale: in the meantime, you can almost buy refill cartridges with a new chip for the cassettes. You can profit by the refill kit: The material can be found at the dealer in the 600-gram package for 29 euros instead of the 39 euros for the cassette including material. Overall, the printing with the Da Vinci remains comparatively high-priced, because our test object with a weight of 8 grams comes with 39 cents to a comparatively salted amount.

Conclusion – only a beginning for 3D print / scan combiners

Overall, the test shows that combining three-dimensional printing and scanning is a good idea but is still in the children’s shoes. The scalability of the XYZprinting Da Vinci 1.0 AiO leaves too much to be desired. With schools and hobbyists, the target group is met, because the operation is simple and the programs clearly structured. However, these users will be quite disappointed if they do not come to a printed copy immediately after scanning, because they have to work up the scan once again. What sounds so simple in practice is currently still un-developed. You may want to wait a while or think about two separate devices. Here, however, you must expect a higher purchase price. The 800 euros of the Da Vinci 1.0 AiO are certainly not to be beat.
