As I discussed at the entrance dedicated to the up! Plus, a printer in distributed 3D in Spain by the company entresD, We have had the opportunity to trand and play with it for a few days. We are going to tell you now what have been our impressions and where 3D printing is currently located. This is important because, as we also discussed this month, 3D printers have come to the malls and have come to stay.
ES the first time that I have the opportunity to use a 3D printer. Although I had already seen several in operation, is not the same look to do. In addition to a review I want to relate what has been my first experience in the world of the impression of three-dimensional objects.
Opening and installing the printer up! Plus
The first surprise comes without opening the packing where the printer is located. Although it is a heavy package, the dimensions of it are fairly contained. Open the we have a case where there is some protection gloves, spatula, some clips that are used to attach the perforated sheets of paper, a few badges and a roll of plastic material ABS.
We also find a piece that holds the drum of material, part that is removed to reduce the dimensions of the box. As curiosity tell you that also This piece has been printed with a 3D printer, as some parts of the nozzle which melts the material and will be painting layer to layer and with infinite patience (our and printer) three-dimensional objects. The fixation of the piece is made with a couple of screws and has no difficulty. Oh, and the connection to the computer is made via a USB cable, as it could not be otherwise.
The rest of the printer we have received is made of steel and painted black, is heavand and sturdand and really have a great pint. Although also surprised the dimensions of the plate that will print your creations, limited to a size 140 × 140 × 135 mm, We can then assemble complete objects based on different parts that we will print separate.
entresD says that the printer is ready for use in 15 minutes. I have to say that if had had a little more experience would have been as well. We just have to screw the part that I said before and assemble the material roll on it. After installing the software, downloadable from his web page and install it. Then have to mount a perforated plates that I said before with four paper clips. Perforated plate makes the plastic grip while you are melting, to secure the workpiece while going printing and that it does not dislodge and make a mess (then we will comment more on this point).
Plug nozzle material involves removing the existing material (in the Maintenance and Withdraw menu option) and simply inserting material in the corresponding entrand and prepare it with New Spool.
The power button is located on the back of the printer. On the front we have a reset button you have to press to start the printer. In doing so will return us a few beeps (with a high enough volume, by the way) which indicate that iprinter has started and is going to heat up some parts to a high temperature (hence the protective gloves).
The basis on which we will make printing needs to be adjusted. We need the head painting material is the distance just plate, equivalent to the thickness of a sheet of paper folded in half. Once we have done the printer will be ready for use. Since I took the printer from the box until it began to be printed took me forty-five minutes, because of my inexperience than anything else.
Already have your printer ready, what do do now?
In the instructions is recommended to download an object from your website and try printing. I chose a downloaded object of Thingiverse, a website with many free and ready to download and print objects. So, I downloaded from one piece to keep the lens cap from the camera, a ring of Green Lantern, a cortagalletas of the reptile of Escher, a box for the Cubieboard… A few days ago I joked on Twitter when I said that it is better to print all Thingiverse who decide on something.
The printing software is available for Windows and Mac computers. To open it we find a three-dimensional view on the left that we can see how the piece printed out, and right different controls to do basic operations with the piece. For example can rotate, or resize the piece and make it big or smaller, among other options.
The piece that you have uploaded It appears to us on the left side in three dimensions, so we can check if the part falls within the print area and if it doesn’t change its orientation or size. All this is quite simple, and if for whatever we have not done well, assured that it won’t happen and the printer refuses to print the piece.
Only remains to initialize the printer from the program and choose the print settings. Thus, if it is a solid piece we can print as is or make it hollow, with greater or lesser density reticle and the consequent saving of material. You can also choose the quality of printing, which will improve the final result but it also noticeably improve the time that I take to have each piece. As an example, the ring of Green Lantern I show you here took more than half an hour to print.
After making the first test I’ve noticed that missing a piece, a tube that curves a little material and making the same feed to work properland and that we don’t have to be watching the impression. But for testing I had no more problem.
Printing parts in three dimensions in the up! Plus
After sending the piece to the printer received a message from the time it will take to have it listed, as well as the weight in material that we will spend (interesting to know the price of each piece) and a series of quite high and shrill beeps us will be notified that it is going to start work. Before printing each piece creates a layer of material that we then withdraw and that is used to secure the printing to the perforated base.
Sometimes, as in the case of ring, the printer creates a structure for the printing and secure the workpiece. For this reason you may be burrs or other we have to sand. Although it is true that on other occasions and depending on the geometry of the part and above all the qualitand and density of the part, the unwanted parts come out virtualland alone and without damaging our impression. There are printers with double-head and that injects a water-soluble material, so at the end of printing submerged it and will disappear the unwanted part of the piece.
Printing, except for the initial beeps, is more or less silent. That if you discount the fan that cools the fixation of the material nozzle and the movements of the truck and head. We must also comment that that should put it in a place ventilated but away from possible air currents to prevent condensation of plastic vapours.
The printing process has something hypnotic. When we send a piece we’ll astonished info (or at least I do) seeing how the head goes painting each of the surfaces which then make up the object.
Qualitand and results
The results, especially in high quality, are really good. The part of parts which is not in contact with the surface or with parts of the subject that creates the printer when printing are smooth and with a good finish.
I also have to say that process has some trial and error. Thus, some parts will not be well since you have to preheat the base so that it bends and at the end is wrong, as it has already happened once. The problem comes when the part is loose or see that printing is not going as it should. The print only can be stopped by pressing the off button, for which we will have to hold truck print with gloves to not burn because this will fall even without holding. Another thing I miss is the ability to pause printing, since once launched this printer is autonomous. We can even disconnect from the computer in the process and it continues printing.
Taking all this into account, and considering that the material is cheap and maybe we will need to print each piece more than once until we have the desired result, 3D printing is something really rewarding. Expensive in time, but useful and interesting in equal parts.
Future or present 3D printing
I don’t know if speak of present or discuss future of 3D printing. Although there is 3D printers of qualitand as the up! Plus we reviewed, the printers have to keep evolving. Thus, with a sensor that measured the distance which is the head we would not have to adjust the height of the platform at the time of print. The support on which is printed the piece must also become self-cleaning and not rely on other elements or parts. With the development of new elements and the lowering of the printers we are going to attend a real revolution.
The 3D printing advances to quick steps and on the right track
I’ve been wanting to develop an object from the beginning in a design program, but the truth is that I have not had time to do so.
Personal printing in three dimensions is within our reach and do not need to invest in more expensive equipment than it would cost us a good computer to have objects with a good quality. That Yes, I believe that to print 3D is something travel. Thus, the printers should have two nozzles, one with soluble material to not leave burrs and not to damage the piece. Some models already have this. They should also be self-cleaning, rather as a pyrolitic ovens, to remove all traces of the printer dock. And, finally, should be able to autoajustarse. An idea would be that you combine 3D scanning with the printing on the same computer, so they could print a sample workpiece, digitize it and correct the parameters so that the next time the piece comes out perfect.
The new version of the up! Plus we have already revised account auto adjustment function, so the 3D printing advances to quick steps and on the right track to become essential in our lives.
Estimation of 3d up printer! Plus
The printer up! Plus, is a very interesting printer. That it is practically ready to be used nothing more out of its box, the ease of use of its software and, above all, the quality of the printed parts make it an excellent choice. For something was chosen as the best printer according to Make Magazine: in addition we will have technical support in Spanish in case of any difficulty in your installation or use.
