3D printing is one of my favorite topics to write in Xataka Smart Home. Frequent innovations in that field printing sites such as Thingiverse projects, in addition to places where it is easy to get lost in the amount of interesting things to make.
But the revision of a 3D printer is more interesting if possible, because doing so always has something of an adventure. Although the 3D printing continues to advance at a good pace, occasionally we encounter any difficulty or problem in print or on the quality of the final piece. Today we will talk of the Cel Robox, 3D printer that we have reviewed for you and in which there has been a little bit of everything as you can see below.

Unpacking and setting up
In a package rather adjusted to the final size of the printer we are a series of elements and accessories that liked us enough. Thus, in addition to a print coil have a carry bag, a pendrive with software, tools to disassemble and clean the printer supports printing etc.
The printer looks pretty good. With a metal frame and a door of good dimensions on the front that opens to the rear and up, we find a printer that has a size of 37 x 34 x 24 cm. The parts that we manufacture with her have a maximum size of 21 x 15 x 10 cm, so if compared to other printers (especially with the 2 Ultimaker) we see that the maximum print size is a little short against the outside size of the unit.
One of the most interesting features of the printer is that it has a head with two extruders with different thickness. The largest of these has a diameter of 0.8 mm for more resistant elements and a faster printing, while the minor has a diameter of 0,3 mm to achieve a better finish and thin layers.
Although in principle having two extruders in the same head is a good idea, especially if we want to improve the printing speed and quality of the manufactured parts, must ensure that the two printed properly and purge them, which does not stop being a can when things are not going as well as they should. Another possibility of the printer is charging two different materials, for example one soluble in water to make the stand of the piece and the other for the manufacture of the actual piece, but to do so we need to change head on the other allowing to print with two materials and not they provided us for the test. In the future the creation of new heads is expected with new features for printer.
The packaging is quite good and removed once all the printer internal protections only to install the software and load print material we. As it us quite easy to come on the pendrive, install this version and then software search updates of the internet. After download and install them touch loading media and installing printing plate.
On your left hand side have a cylinder in which we will install the coil of the impression material, something simple thanks to its distribution of material in proprietary coils called SmartReels. In theory, it is as simple as placing the SmartReel correctly, so that the printer can read the chip that is inside, which automatically configures the printer with the necessary parameters. Once done this just have to introduce material for slot 1 charging until the printer “pull” to get it to the extruder.
Together with the white SmartReel of test they sent us to a PLA blue and one red. We have not only to print with print material supplied but that we have also done tests with normal Green ABS. The reason is that supplied coils have a chip that is much easier to load material, and although it would be more comfortable and easier to use these coils, they have a surcharge against third-party impression material coils.
One of the tests that I like to see the ease of use is to see slow long since bag box printer until it begins to print. As well, in the Cel Robox has not been possible to do so, since in principle blue coil load was done correctly but the printer does not detect material in the extruder. After multiple attempts, purges, settings, software updates, and so, I got the printer started to operate, but I lost count of the time spent to achieve this.
AutoMaker software and 3D printing
The GUI of the software of the printer is quite modern and tries to facilitate the user using the printer. It is probably the best program that I have tried, but I have to say that it has enough room for improvement. I miss an option to load the material and leave the printer on the verge. I would like to have grouped the charging function of the expulsion, cleaning material and other material on one screen.
The loading of the pieces to print is fairly intuitive, You can clone, turn and place the pieces in the best possible location on the printing plate. Quality options could be somewhat better explained and not based on icons, rather confused by the way because it seems that we are selecting the filling of the piece, when in fact it is what quality we will obtain our impressions
The best software is function of self-calibration. Thanks to the information of the material present in the coil SmartReel and primarily to the auto setting of the height of the bed of printing on nine points, it is able to ensure the quality of printing automatically at the beginning of each print.
Functionality of the printer is detected at any time how much material out of the extruder, notifying If the material coming out does not match expected. Test unit had not had the defect of the detection of material that we probably would have improved or secured at least the quality of prints this function. Instead has been a real boredom to see get this message again and again on the computer screen and the printing is paused whenever it appeared.
But the worst software is that automatic updates has directly made we could not print. The software is not the polished that I should, and a printer whose goal is to “plug and print” as the Cel Robox leaves us with a somewhat bittersweet. It is true that once the learning curve it is convenient to use, but mentioned bugs ruin the review. In a couple of tests of printing, this was interrupted just before the end of the piece, ruining two jobs for more than 20 hours.
After the dose of frustration, calls for service (by some quite good), software updates, purge of material etc we got our first impressions of quality. To highlight three very positive points:
The first is that both prints with ABS and PLA benefit of the closed design of the printer and filters. Printing fumes are filtered quite effectively by the Cel Robox and I have to say that the “chamusquina” smell is quite lower than in other printers.
Another benefit is the noise, but don’t expect a silent printer because the Cel Robox is not. Like other printers we tested, it is noisy, but in his defense I would swear that something less than the others.
And the third positive point is the printing surface. Get the temperature printing rather quickly, although we do not understand why it does not heat the base while the extruder, with what time would be gained. And, above all, the printer dock is very easy to clean and eliminate printing waste. We have not needed to use any cleaning products and has gone quite well, without damaging the fixing of parts during printing.
The quality of the parts when we have achieved satisfactory prints the truth is that it is good, getting really notable parts in PLA and especially with ABS.
We also have negative points. The door does not stop being a real Tin. I would have liked to use a stronger expression but I don’t know if there are children reading this entry, so put your favorite dirty expression and keep reading. There is no way to open it if something goes awry. It is good that you look through our security, but does not have an emergency mechanism makes us to pause, wait, or directly to cancel printing for minimal problems. And until the temperature has not lowered completely, both of the extruder and plate, not pdoremos the door. The Cel Robox could have been one of the best printers that have undergone Xataka Smart Home and could easily have recommended if not for the problems that we have had during the review
Purging, cleaning and pre-press operations are not as good as in other printers. It should release more material for the extruder before each print job to ensure that the printer dock prints correctly, although we can not assure that it does not originate from the faults mentioned in the detection of material.
As a curiosity of the software, it should be noted that if we have a Go Pro camera we can automate the creation of timelapses that show the process of printing accelerated form, as we can see in the video above.
Final evaluation of the Cel Robox
The Cel Robox could have been one of the best printers they have undergone Xataka Smart Home and that we could easily have recommended if not for the problems arising at the time of updating the printer software, load the original material, purge parts and calibrate the printer, etc. It has probably been one of revisions in which more hours I’ve invested, and also that most headaches has given me, as much as to personally take the printer to see why stopped working try third-party material.
The reason was that the printer not detected correctly had material loaded (or of third parties or the own brand), as well as the impossibility of purging material because it not reached the necessary temperature to melt the ABS and let out the material despite having thus indicated in the application.
Despite being loaded with functions as the double extruder, auto-configurable thanks to the chip embedded in them, door security, platform Heatable and coils for quick cleaning, possibility of loading two materials by changing the head and future functions thanks to plug-ins for the printer, etc. just not meet promised. The software can be improved, and they should verify the quality of the updates before releasing them, especially if they have as objective that is easier to use printer and which gives fewer problems.
If you decide the Cel Robox, ensure proper maintenance and support of it. On the website of the manufacturer, they offer two years warranty and support. I guess that software updates will be polishing the problems that we have found. In short, a pity that the review of a very interesting printer has been so problematic. I hope that if in the future, they released a new model of printer to prove it and not find me with no problem (to compensate for all those found with this).
